Its been several months since my last post due to most of my time being spent trying to sort out the new house.
However, I have been working away on my chess set side project in the odd hour I get spare. I now have all the pieces required to build both sets of pieces and have built most of them. There are a few models for each side that require a bit of converting which is what I have been slowly doing. The models I built previously have been spray painted and the base coats nearly completed.
I also made a bit of a start on the three Nurgle figures shown in the last post but nothing worth photoing. I bought some liquid green stuff and have been slowly experimenting with that. I'm not 100% convinced of it yet but I can see potential.
My wife took a trip to England and managed to find both 'realistic water' & 'water effects' so I can finally finish the base for the Maggoth Lord. I have started a test base to see how it works and will post the finished result once I have applied the Nurgles Rot slime paint to it. Fingers crossed it looks good when finished.
Photos to come in the near(ish) future of how the chess board will look with all characters lined up.

Sneak peak at the next wave
With three (smaller) models complete it means that Im am now allowed to make three new (smaller) models. I have gone with a couple of Forsaken and another Marauder as these are the most numerous of my models. As you can tell there is still a long way to go and they may undergo significant changes from these concepts but I feel the base idea is there for each model.
Side Project - Chess set
I have started a new side project to create a chess set using Warhammer models. The set is designed with reasonable use in mind. My most likely opponent at chess would be my wife, so I asked her which theme she would like for her side of the board. She chose a 'light blue, female elf army', so to contrast I thought I would go with a Beastmen of Khorne army. Red vs Blue should look good.
The idea is to have standard warriors for pawns, large units for rooks, cavalry for knights, wizards for bishops, and appropriate characters for the king / queen.
Its still early doors as yet but I got a few models up and running, with an early paint test in mind for one of the pawns.

Blightking - model 1 - Finished
Im pretty happy with the final result of this Blightking. The severed head in his tongue isnt great as it was a test that didnt exactly work as planned, however the overall model looks great. My first real attempt at a Nurgle conversation is finished!
Warriors Champion - Finished
Here is the finished Warriors Champion. Im pretty happy with the way he turned out. After these photos were taken my wife pointed out that the tentacle foot needs a little more detail, i.e some blood and slime effects, but this shouldn't take to long to tidy up before he goes back on the shelf.

Marauder - model 1 - Finished
My first wave of finished models. Took some time but happy to see them finished. Here is the first Marauder model... only 20 more to go.

Competition update
So, my Maggoth Lord that I entered for the painting competition got its results. I got 24/27. I got marked down for not filling in the gap under the seat, no extreme highlights and not having executed the advanced techniques well. The main thing to take away from this is that I now have a check list with which to use for my next entry.
On the plus side 24/27 was the second highest score and I won the 'Adult Monster' category which means I won this piece of concept art. Space Marines aren't really my thing but Im happy to have won something. I'll keep it and hopefully add to it in the future.

Warriors Champion - W.I.P - Base colours
I have finished the base coat colours for the Warriors champion so that you can get a good idea of where he is headed. A long to go at the moment but certainly getting there now.
Blightking - Model 1 - Painted
Here the final painted Blightking. The lighting for the photos is a little off, my light box and camera weren't in harmony. I added rust effects to the weapons, the boils and the eyes since my last update. Now all its needs is the base to be finished.
Maggoth Lord - Competition entry
I managed to get the Maggoth Lord painted in time to submit to he painting competition. I was unable to do the waterfall effects that I wanted to do because I live in New Zealand meaning 5 weeks is not enough time to source such an obscure product. I should be getting some later this week so I will have to do the waterfall once I get the model back from the shop.
